I have just been reading through John Schott’s Clean up on aisle three where he introduces his idea of the $10k Blog Challenge. Basically he is going to give $3, 000 to the blogger who is voted the “kindest linker”, and $100 to 70 runners-up. I just can’t help wondering if it is worth it, to me that is £6, 000, I could buy nice new or nearly new car for that and would if I had the money (read his article for details).
Dave Child is one of a few bloggers who have questioned why he is doing it, because a lot of bloggers are in it for the money (I don’t at the moment, but I probably will in the feature) although say they are not dispite the fact they have adverts on their blogs. I also find myself wondering also, hence this article, but I think it is a good bad idea and here is why.
A few hundred years ago wealthy landowners paid for a lot of the churches that are in the UK today. They built them for a number of reasons. 1) To praise God. 2) To show their wealth and leave their mark. 3) To improve the community. They may not have thought much about #3 but that is what happened, even today, churches are the hearts of many communities in many towns and villages. Churches aren’t just buildings of worship, they are also community meeting grounds where everyone goes to regularly.
On the interweb we don’t have buildings, it isn’t possible to send brinks and other materials down an Internet connection (at least not yet anyway). Instead we have message boards, chat-rooms and even weblogs where everyone can meet up and discuss topics that affect them.
This brings me back to my question, Is John Schott Wasting his money? I don’t think he is he is just trying to make his mark on the blogging community. He is also, literally, putting his money where is mouth is making a huge contribution to the “blogosphere”.
